The pumpkin cupcake is one of our best sellers and one that is closest to the heart of cupcake owner Kristin Cobb. Kristin got the idea for the cupcake from her Aunt Barbara’s pumpkin cake.
Kristin says she and her family grew up eating Aunt Barbara’s pumpkin cake and that it was always a family favorite at Thanksgiving, Christmas, and other special occasions. She says that she and her family would use Aunt Barbara’s recipe to make the pumpkin cake for family and friends during the holidays.
To pay homage to her aunt and her childhood memories, Kristin decided to adapt the recipe for Cupcake DownSouth’s pumpkin cupcake. She says that the recipes are quite similar but that one of the distinct differences is that the cake recipe used plain cream cheese icing while the CupcakeDownSouth recipe uses cinnamon cream cheese icing.
Kristin says that Aunt Barbara, her dad’s sister, has tried the cupcake and loves it. She jokingly said she also thinks she deserves some royalties. “She loves it, though; she thinks it’s great,” Kristin comments.
The pumpkin cupcake is one of Kristin’s favorites because it reminds her of her childhood and of memories of being with family during the holidays. This sentiment is common among many of the Cupcake DownSouth customers who come into our stores each fall. Many say that they love all things pumpkin because pumpkin makes them feel like fall and reminds them of holidays and time spent with family.
The pumpkin cupcake runs through October and November and has been a favorite among customers throughout the years. The cupcakes are available as regular-sized cupcakes or as mega cupcakes by request and on special order. Find them in our Mt. Pleasant, Downtown Charleston, and Downtown Columbia stores Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays.
